Managing Burnout in the Legal Profession

This CLE will examine the impact of chronic stress and burnout on professional competence and well-being. The discussion will include an overview of common risk factors that contribute to the higher rates of psychological and behavioral symptoms in attorneys, including substance abuse and depression, and how to detect early signs and symptoms of burnout. The CLE will include a panel discussion with leading in-house counsel on various topics contributing to burnout, including meeting expectations in a demanding work environment; balancing competing work/life demands; managing stress and handling conflict; and dealing with bias. The session will include both Bar-sponsored and independent resources for support.

Speakers

Dr. Ilona Salmons, ED.D., LMFT

Dr. Salmons is a psychotherapist, leadership consultant, and speaker who works with lawyers and law firms to promote mental wellness in the workplace. She specializes in helping firms and in-house legal teams resolve a variety of issues to improve employee well-being and maintain a high-performance work culture. Ilona is an expert on mental health in the legal field and has been invited to speak with Big Law firms, Fortune500 in-house teams, and Bar Associations across the U.S. and Canada. She is passionate about creating workplaces where legal professionals can thrive.Ilona received her B.A. in Psychology from UCLA and her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. She obtained her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine, where she focused her research on wellness in BigLaw and published her dissertation, Best Practices for Managing Burnout in Attorneys. She is licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and has a private practice in Los Angeles. 

Jacki Santana, Snap

Jacki is Associate General Counsel, and leads the Platform & Technology team at Snap Inc. Jacki advises clients and negotiates agreements covering a range of Snap's commercial activities, including platform partnerships, data licensing, and SaaS. She also manages a global team of attorneys who support Snap's AR Enterprise Solutions, Engineering/IT, Payments, and Hardware business teams. Additionally, Jacki is a member of Snap Legal's Talent and Pro Bono Committees. Prior to Snap, Jacki worked as in-house counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance Group as well as a privately held cross-channel marketing software and services company. Jacki earned her B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law. In her free time, she enjoys exploring museums and playgrounds around Los Angeles with her husband and two young kids.

Jarin Jackson, Netflix

Jarin is Director and Senior Counsel for Netflix's Content Intellectual Property group. His team handles a wide range of IP issues - including rights acquisition, production clearance, brand enforcement, and pre-litigation claims - that arise from the creation of Netflix’s original content, which is enjoyed by over 230 million subscribers around the world. The team closely collaborates with the creative and marketing teams that produce and promote Netflix’s award-winning films, shows, documentaries, and stand-up comedy. Prior to Netflix, Jarin worked in-house at Viacom on its IP & Litigation team. Jarin graduated from Cornell University and obtained his law degree from UCLA School of Law.

Varty Hindoyan, Meta

Varty is Associate General Counsel for the Brands and Marketing Legal team at Meta. She advises business units on consumer facing marketing initiatives that span the globe on intellectual property, advertising, consumer protection, privacy, and related regulatory matters. She is a strategic and action-oriented attorney focusing on advancing businesses, protecting brands, and advising teams in evolving legal and technological landscapes. Prior to joining Meta, Varty was in-house counsel at Disney supporting the Consumer Products Commercialization segment on marketing, licensing, and retail matters. Prior to Disney, Varty was a litigator who began her career at O’Melveny & Myers. Varty earned her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and received her J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law.
