Stephen M. Weiner, a Member and Chair of the Health Law Practice of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., will speak at a program presented by the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council entitled, “Healthcare and Payment Reform: Impact on Value Demonstration.” The program will take place on Friday, November 2nd in Waltham, MA.
In his presentation, “Massachusetts Payment Reform Legislation Review,” Mr. Weiner will provide an update on the context of the new health care reform law in Massachusetts, its implementation, and the implications of the reform legislation for the medical device industry.
“Healthcare and Payment Reform: Impact on Value Demonstration” will feature presentations from payers, providers, and other industry representatives on a variety of topics involving the recent wave of innovation in the delivery and payment for healthcare, from incentivizing providers to involve patients in care decisions, to transforming the way services are reimbursed at the national level.
Mr. Weiner has more than 30 years of experience in health care as a policy maker, educator, and attorney representing health care services providers in a broad array of matters, in the U.S. and abroad. He has been active in the development of the various Massachusetts health care reform laws as well as in the implementation of the Commonwealth’s electronic health record initiative. Internationally, he played a key role in structuring the health care regulatory system for Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), currently serves as a member of the licensing board for DHCC, and represents organizations engaged in “medical tourism.”
Since its formation, Mr. Weiner has served as the president of The HealthWell Foundation, one of the leading national charitable organizations providing financial assistance to underinsured persons in need of high cost drug treatments. He served as a board member of the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and as a member of the House of Delegates of the Massachusetts Easter Seal Society.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Weiner served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Rate Setting Commission, Special Assistant to the Governor of Massachusetts for health policy and Director of the Boston University Center for Law and Health Sciences. Mr. Weiner was named “Lawyer of the Year” for 2011 for Health Care Law in Boston by Best Lawyers. Nationally ranked by Chambers USA for his strategic and policy work, he has been named among The Best Lawyers in America as well as an “Outstanding Hospital Lawyer” by Nightingale’s Healthcare News.
