Karen S. Lovitch has been selected to manage the Health Law Practice of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. Ms. Lovitch, a Member in the firm's Washington D.C. office, is also Vice Chair of the firm's Diversity Committee and Chair of the D.C. Entry-Level Hiring Committee.
Mintz Levin's Health Law Practice is comprised of over 30 attorneys, many of whom have served as in-house counsel or have held senior government positions. The Practice represents both for-profit and non-profit companies who provide health care or service the health care industry throughout the U.S. and abroad. Clients span the full spectrum of the industry, including hospital systems, managed care organizations, laboratories, long term care providers, durable medical equipment suppliers, behavioral health companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacy retailers and pharmacy benefit managers. Attorneys in the Practice counsel clients on a range of issues from managing government investigations involving potential civil, administrative, and criminal liability, to structuring multi-million dollar corporate transactions, to creating complex affiliation arrangements.

Throughout her career, Ms. Lovitch has advised health care clients on regulatory, transactional, and operational issues, including Medicare coverage and reimbursement, the development and implementation of health care compliance programs, and licensure and certification matters. She also counsels clients on the legal, practical and fraud and abuse implications of business arrangements, and her expertise includes the federal Anti-kickback Statute, the Stark law, and state statutes prohibiting kickbacks and self-referrals.
In addition, Ms. Lovitch has special expertise in the representation of clinical laboratories. She regularly counsels laboratories on compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and state laboratory licensure laws, federal and state limitations on billing for diagnostic services, and legal restrictions on sales and marketing activities. She has served as regulatory counsel in a number of mergers and acquisitions involving laboratories.
Ms. Lovitch graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University, and she earned her J.D. magna cum laude from the Washington College of Law at The American University. She is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
