Boston, MA – Mintz Levin attorneys R. Robert Popeo and Stephen M. Weiner have been named 2011 Boston “Lawyers of the Year” in white collar criminal defense and health care, respectively, by Best Lawyers, which compiles annual listings of outstanding lawyers through a rigorous peer-review process. Only one attorney per specialty in each community is honored as “Lawyer of the Year.”

The firm’s longtime chairman and a member of the Litigation practice, Mr. Popeo is among the country’s premier trial attorneys, with more than 40 years in the profession in both the public and private sectors. Having started his career as a law clerk to a federal judge, he served as Special Assistant Attorney General and, later, was appointed as a United States Commissioner (United States Magistrate Judge), prior to entering private practice.

Among his numerous accolades, Mr. Popeo has been recognized by the National Law Journal as one of the country’s top 100 lawyers for nine consecutive years, named a “heavy hitter” by The American Lawyer and recognized as a “Senior Statesman” in the most recent edition of Chambers USA. In addition, he has been continually listed in The Best Lawyers in America and recognized as a Massachusetts “Super Lawyer” every year since 2004.

A tireless advocate of civic causes, Mr. Popeo has served on a number of non-profit boards, including the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, United Way of Massachusetts and National Conference of Christians and Jews.  He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, a member of the Board of Overseers of Northeastern University and was recently appointed to the board of the New England chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors, among other civic commitments.

The chair of the firm’s national Health Law practice, Mr. Weiner has more than 30 years of experience in health care as a policy maker, educator, and attorney representing health care services providers in a broad array of matters, in the U.S. and abroad. He has been active in the development of Massachusetts’ signature health care reform program as well as in the implementation of the Commonwealth’s electronic health record initiative. Internationally, he played a key role in structuring the health care regulatory system for Dubai Healthcare City and represents many organizations engaged in “medical tourism.”

Mr. Weiner currently serves as a board member of the Massachusetts Health Council and is the board chair of The HealthWell Foundation, one of the leading national charitable organizations providing financial assistance to underinsured persons in need of high cost drug treatments.  He served as a board member of the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and as a member of the House of Delegates of the Massachusetts Easter Seal Society.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Weiner served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Rate Setting Commission, Special Assistant to the Governor of Massachusetts for health policy and Director of the Boston University Center for Law and Health Sciences. Nationally ranked by Chambers USA for his strategic and policy work, he has been named among The Best Lawyers in America, Boston’s Best Lawyers as well as an “Outstanding Hospital Lawyer” by Nightingale’s Healthcare News.

Outside of the health care field, Mr. Weiner is a member of the board of trustees of The Boston Ballet, Opera Boston and the New England Conservatory Lab Charter School Foundation.
