Mintz Levin Center for Health Law & Policy Participates in Partners HealthCare’s Connected Health Symposium 2011

10/19/2011

Washington, D.C. – Three members of ML Strategies, LLC and the Mintz Levin Center for Health Law & Policy, Tom Koutsoumpas, Alexander Hecht and Kevin Kappel, will present at the Partners HealthCare’s Connected Health Symposium 2011, “Driving Quality Up and Costs Down: New Technologies for an Era of Accountability.”  Also participating in the symposium is Stephen Weiner, Chair of Mintz Levin’s Health Law Section.  The two-day event is taking place on October 20-21 at the Boston Park Plaza in Boston.

Mr. Koutsoumpas, Senior Vice President of ML Strategies and Executive Director of the Mintz Levin Center for Health Law & Policy, is participating in a panel discussion entitled, “Washington Update: Debt and Deficit Implications for Healthcare.”  Also speaking on the panel are Mr. Hecht, Vice President of Government Relations at ML Strategies and Deputy Director of the Center for Health Law & Policy; Kevin Kappel, Manager of Government Relations at ML Strategies and Policy Director of the Center for Health Law & Policy; and Mr. Weiner of Mintz Levin. The panel will deconstruct and explain the range of opportunities and challenges confronting the industry at a time when the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction is working to find $1.2 trillion in cuts in the federal budget and health reform implementation continues.  It will also address how policy decisions being made on Capitol Hill and in the administration will drive industry activity.

Mr. Hecht will also speak on the closing panel of the symposium, “Health Care in the Tumultuous New Era of Debt Reduction Politics.” The havoc on financial markets alters prospects in a major way for government-funded healthcare programs, from Medicare to the VA to the survival of health insurance reform to funding for health IT.  With a month before the new debt-reduction “super committee” possibly recommends the next drastic round of funding cuts to Congress, this session will explore what health care politics look like in this new era of debt reduction.
