Spotlight On … Sahir Surmeli
Sa is a corporate finance attorney and has been working with investment
banks, public companies and later-stage private companies in financing
activities for 15 years. Sa is currently representing a number of
energy and clean tech clients in public offerings and private placements.
He has also represented underwriters and issuer clients in traditional
energy fields, including oil and gas, pipeline and exploration financings,
and mergers and acquisitions. Sa has worked on a wide variety of
capital raising projects, including equity, debt, syndicated loan
and structured finance offerings, and has worked on deals raising
over $6.3 billion for investors and issuers.
“Ideally, I partner with our clients 12 to 18 months before they go public or seek exit strategies to help implement strategies to maximize valuations and exit returns and facilitate a smooth IPO process or alternative exit, such as a sale, reverse merger or leveraged transaction,” he notes. Sa has an MBA in corporate finance and he focuses on adding value in complex financing structures and helping younger companies navigate the challenges of the public and private markets. He also has extensive international experience—he previously practiced in New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong and now works from the Boston office of Mintz Levin. He has represented clients in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Turkey, the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

SEED 2007: Call for Renewable
Energy Company Applicants
Massachusetts Technology Collaborative
Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, a quasi–state agency, established the Sustainable Energy Economic Development (SEED) Initiative to support growth and commercialization of renewable energy technologies in Massachusetts. SEED provides direct and flexible capital to early-stage companies for new renewable-energy-related product development and facilitates companies in gaining access to private capital. Predevelopment Financing Initiative
Massachusetts Technology Collaborative
The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative board of directors has approved this round of the Clean Energy Predevelopment Financing Initiative in an effort to support the development of grid-connected renewable energy generating facilities in New England. As of October 1, 2005, $1,574,934 has been committed to projects supported by this solicitation. Two types of funding are available under this solicitation: funding for feasibility studies and funding for predevelopment activities (e.g., facility design, environmental studies, permitting and similar activities). Funding for feasibility studies is available only to public instrumentalities and private nonprofit organizations and takes the form of grants of up to $50,000 to public instrumentalities and unsecured loans of up to $50,000 to nonprofit organizations. Funding for predevelopment activities is available to public instrumentalities, private nonprofit organizations and private for-profit corporations or partnerships, and takes the form of an unsecured loan of up to $250,000 for wind and biomass projects, or up to $150,000 for other types of renewable energy projects.

Research and Development for Hydrogen
Production and Delivery Technology
U.S. Department of Energy Golden Field Office
DATES: The closing date for receipt of applications is March 27, 2007, 11:59 p.m. EST.
SUMMARY: Research proposals are sought for improved hydrogen compression technology for hydrogen pipeline transmission to improve reliability, reduce capital cost and improve energy efficiency. Research proposals are also sought for improved compressors for refueling sites to improve reliability and reduce capital cost. Improvements to current compression technology, the use of more novel compression technology such as electrochemical compression, metal hydride compression approaches, or other approaches that can meet these challenges will all be considered.

Environmental Impacts of Hydrogen Systems
U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency
and Renewable Energy
DATES: The closing date for receipt of applications is April 18, 2007, 11:59 p.m. EST
SUMMARY: The purpose of this project is to systematically identify and examine possible near and long-term ecological and environmental effects of the production of hydrogen from various energy sources (based on the DOE hydrogen production strategy) and the use of that hydrogen as a transportation fuel and for stationary power. Precise systems-based engineering models of the likely hydrogen and criteria pollutant emissions will be developed and the potential impacts of the different market penetration scenarios will be quantified.
