In the June edition of Mintz Levin’s Energy and Clean Tech Connections, we’ve gathered recent information from a wide variety of sources in an effort to keep you abreast of what’s new in the world of clean tech. We draw your attention to the latest industry developments, news from Capitol Hill, grant opportunities, and upcoming events.
This past month, Tom Burton and Patrick Kealy from Mintz Levin’s Energy and Clean Technology Practice Group, Jim Matheson of Flagship Ventures, Greg Watson of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs, and Karl Jessen of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, all presented their perspectives on the U.S. clean tech marketplace at a number of conferences in England. To read more about these events, visit Jim’s blog on the Xconomy website.
On the legislative front, two bills addressing climate change and renewable energy did not survive a vote on the Senate floor during the month of June. A bill sponsored by U.S. Senators Joseph Lieberman and John Warner would have sought to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly over the course of the next decade, and the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008 would have provided incentives for research and commercialization of renewable energy technology and generation. In Massachusetts, two important bills—the Green Communities Act of 2007 and an Act Relative to Green Collar Jobs—are still pending since they are being discussed in Committees. For more information, see the relevant articles in Federal and State Happenings below. In future issues, we will continue to keep you posted on legislation aimed at promoting alternative and renewable energy. We hope you enjoy this month’s edition of the newsletter.

The Renewable Fuels Foundation Offers
Its First Grants for Ethanol Production
The Renewable Fuels Foundation (RFF) Board of Directors funds those research projects that have clear goals and measurable outcomes with benchmarks that will advance the science of ethanol production. While sound research should be the basis for all grant applications, the RFF will only support projects that directly enhance domestic production of ethanol and the efficient use of co-products. One grant will be awarded for $150,000, of which $75,000 will be made available over two years. Viable projects may qualify for continued funding past this time frame.
Research project proposals must have a national implication, not local. The RFF prefers to fund national model projects, thereby making a bigger impact to the U.S. ethanol market.
