He is also a regular participant in the firm’s pro bono program and has counseled a variety of individuals and organizations regarding their IP portfolios and associated infringement, licensing, and enforcement matters.
Joe regularly counsels clients on domestic and international trademark and copyright infringement and enforcement issues. His experience includes all facets of trademark and copyright litigation; copyright and trademark merger, acquisition, and licensing related issues, including due diligence, IP audits, and negotiating and drafting transactional documents. He also is experienced in domestic and international trademark searching, prosecution, and enforcement, including Trademark Trial and Appeal Board opposition and cancellation proceedings.

He has counseled clients on domestic and international copyright matters, including developing and deploying protection strategies and DCMA-related issues; and various software, open source, and free software licensing, advisory, and transactional matters. He also has experience with the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, and enforcing domain name rights and registrations.
Before joining Mintz Levin, Joe spent more than 12 years working in the business and legal affairs departments of EMI Music Publishing and Sony BMG Music Entertainment where he focused on trademark, litigation, complex licensing, and merger and acquisition matters involving the worldwide corporate and intellectual property assets of those two organizations. His experience there included negotiating and drafting a variety of artist and songwriter publishing and distribution agreements and copyright infringement and enforcement matters.

- Represented various consumer goods retailers in obtaining, opposing, and canceling trademarks before the US Patent and Trademark Office and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board
- Represented a consumer goods retailer in a copyright infringement action brought by the estate of a world-famous architect
- Represented a financial services company in an action by a multinational computer hardware manufacturer over rights to Internet domain names
