Privacy Newsletter: Websites as Financial Institutions and Clinical Trials

At a time of growing concern about the loss of personal privacy and the ease with which personal information can be disseminated to an unanticipated audience, newly adopted laws and laws not previously enforced may decrease incidences of unauthorized use, but also may place unwanted obstacles in the way of biomedical research.  In December 2000, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a final rule regarding standards for privacy of individually identifiable health information.  This rule, as well as similar regulation adopted in the European Union, has important implications for clinical trials in the United States and abroad.
