Far-ranging changes to the U.S. patent system will begin to take effect with President Obama’s signing of the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (“the Leahy-Smith AIA”). A number of provisions will go into effect immediately upon the bill’s enactment. These are discussed briefly in this alert, along with highlights of the most important provisions that will take effect within the 12 to 18 months following the President’s signing of the bill.
