Health Advisory: New CMS Rules Impact Hospital Operations

On November 27, 2006, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published two new final rules that will impact hospital operations. CMS has revised the Medicare and Medicaid Programs' Hospital Conditions of Participation (CoPs) related to the completion of history and physical examinations, authentication of verbal orders, securing medications and completion of postanesthesia evaluations. Additionally, CMS published new requirements for hospital discharge notices impacting all Medicare inpatient hospital discharges.
