The Mintz Levin 2008 Pro Bono Report 27 Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation The mission of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships for higher education to deserving sons and daughters of Marines and former Marines, with particular attention given to children whose parent was killed or wounded in action. In 2008, the Foundation awarded $4.55 million to 1,393 scholarship recipients. The Foundation also awards scholarship assistance to every child of a Marine, or of a Navy Corpsman serving with the Marines, whose parent is killed in the Global War on Terror. This past year, Mintz Levin has provided legal assistance to the Foundation in connection with regulatory matters and trademark registration, overseen by Kevin Ainsworth. CampInteractive CampInteractive introduces the inspiration of the outdoors and the creative power of technology to underprivileged, inner-city youth, providing kids with cutting edge technology skills for the 21st century. Through their unique, year-round program, participants develop leadership skills, computer proficiency, and a confidence that carries over into all aspects of their lives. Kevin Norman, Alexandra Hankin, and Stephen Gulotta worked with this client over the past year. …For New Growth Economic Justice Project In 2008, Mintz Levin continued its commitment to the Belin Economic Justice Project of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law of the Boston Bar Association, a program that facilitates the provision of free legal business assistance to community development organizations and to low-income entrepreneurs who are starting or expanding small businesses located in underserved communities in Massachusetts. On July 9, 2008, Mintz Levin hosted a clinic at Roxbury Community College, where teams of Mintz Levin attorneys and summer associates met with a dozen entrepreneurs in the community to assess their legal needs. Subsequently, the fiirm undertook one-on-one representation of all the entrepreneurs who were ready to proceed with their business plans. From trademarking a barbecue sauce to providing structural advice on a limited partnership, Mintz Levin attorneys from many practice areas pooled their talent to help launch these local businesses. Victory Programs Victory Programs provides innovative care and services for vulnerable populations in urban settings, such as those facing homelessness, addiction or other chronic illnesses. Jonathan Cosco and Colin Van Dyke worked with Victory Programs over the past several years in connection with their attempts to construct a “New Urban Farm” on a portion of one of their program sites. In appreciation, Victory Programs dedicated their annual report to Jonathan and Mintz Levin.
