KIDS IN NEED OF DEFENSE (KIND) Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an organization devoted to providing representation for unaccompanied children who enter the US immigration system alone. In the last year, over 50 Mintz attorneys and legal staff from four offices—Boston, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC—have worked with KIND on 14 matters. In these cases, Mintz’s representa- tion often expands to include siblings or entire families. In addition to individual representation, Mintz attorneys Angela Dilenno, Sue Finegan, Mathilda McGee-Tubb, Andy Nathanson, and Joel Nollette, along with project analyst Kayla Fries, have helped a team of legal services lawyers with research relating to passage of Massachusetts legislation codifying Probate and Family Court jurisdiction for special immigrant juveniles ages 19 to 21. LAWYERS CLEARINGHOUSE Lawyers Clearinghouse is an organization dedicated to providing pro bono legal services to residents of homeless shelters and others in need in the Boston area. Mintz has been a partner of the Lawyers Clearinghouse for almost 25 years. Recently, our work has been coordinated at the firm by attorney Samantha Kingsbury. Each year, Mintz partners with Liberty Mutual and other in-house legal departments to staff Lawyers Clearinghouse legal clinics at local homeless shelters. The prospective pro bono clients meet with teams of attorneys and other professionals to discuss the issues they are facing, which often include housing, social security benefits, bank- ruptcy, or immigration issues, among many others. The clinic itself consists of only intakes/interviews, but those intakes often result in longer-term representation. MEDICAL LEGAL PARTNERSHIPS Clients referred to Mintz from the Medical Legal Partnerships at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), Boston Children’s Hospital, and Boston Medical Center face severe medical challenges and are necessarily focused on their illnesses and treatment. The legal difficulties that often accompany a serious medical diagnosis—such as complications with housing, problems associated with government benefits programs, or arrangements for guardianship and family planning—oftentimes create immense hardship for these individuals during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. Mintz attorneys step in to provide support and counsel on discreet but crucial legal matters so that MLP clients can focus on their health and recovery. Since 1972, the Met Council has been a defender and advocate for New Yorkers in need and has raised awareness around the growing problem of Jewish poverty. Met Council provides services ranging from domestic violence counseling to kosher food pantries to career training.
