Fostering Excellence: How Michelle Lipkowitz Was Named DC Managing Partner of the Year
Michelle Lipkowitz’s leadership has redefined what it means to be a senior leader at Mintz. In just over a year since her appointment as Managing Member of the firm’s Washington, DC, office, she has strengthened client and community relationships, fostered an environment of inclusion, and implemented innovative strategies that have propelled the office forward. Her vision, coupled with a relentless commitment to mentorship, creating opportunities, and cultural transformation, has earned her the distinction of 2024 DC Managing Partner of the Year, an honor awarded by The National Law Journal for her business leadership prowess and ability to implement notable initiatives that have strengthened the firm’s internal culture and external reputation.
Michelle’s leadership has focused on continuing to strengthen the firm’s Litigation practice while fostering a welcoming and collaborative work environment. She has an active practice that encompasses complex commercial litigation, white collar defense, and government and internal investigations. Michelle has been at the forefront of fostering inclusion, ensuring these values are embedded into the office’s culture. She serves on Mintz’s Equity Advisory Council and Pride Steering Committee, and champions MIATTY, an affinity group of lawyers of color and their allies. Just months into her tenure, she organized and moderated a Juneteenth discussion with author Bruce Jackson, creating a platform for important conversations about the intersections of race, class, and the law. Additionally, under her leadership, Mintz’s DC office participated in the Capital Pride Parade for the first time ever in the firm’s history, marking a significant milestone in Mintz’s commitment to LGBTQ+ visibility and engagement.
Expanding internal communication and fostering engagement have also been central to her approach. She launched First Friday Live at 5, a monthly newsletter highlighting key wins, deals, notable matters, health and wellness tips, and pro bono and DEI initiatives, along with employee spotlights and upcoming events. This initiative has streamlined communication and improved transparency across the 120-person office, serving as a valuable tool for colleagues to stay connected. Additionally, she has implemented curated small-group dinners, a monthly all-office happy hour, and informal coffee and lunch breaks, creating meaningful opportunities for mentorship and collaboration among attorneys and staff.
Beyond Mintz, Michelle remains deeply involved in the legal and nonprofit communities, serving on nonprofit and appointed boards and encouraging colleagues to expand their client and community relationships through participation in bar associations, nonprofit organizations, and other civic initiatives. Currently, Michelle sits on the boards of the University of Maryland Medical System and Folio Collaborative. Her lead-by-example approach reinforces her commitment to representation and philanthropy.
Effective leadership starts with listening, ensuring every voice is heard, and every perspective is valued. At Mintz, we've created an environment where collaboration and innovation empower individuals and shape our success.
