Privacy legislation will likely be among the major policy initiatives in the 117th Congress. Implementation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s enactment of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) spurred renewed interest at the federal level to pursue comprehensive legislation to address growing concerns about privacy. If enacted, a federal privacy law could potentially affect every sector of the US economy by regulating how companies collect and use the information of hundreds of millions of Americans.

Join Mintz and ML Strategies for a webinar that explores the issues surrounding federal privacy legislation. Cynthia Larose and Christian Fjeld will be joined by Jared BombergSenior Counsel to US Senator Maria Cantwell, US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; David LeDucVice President of Public Policy, Network Advertising Initiative; and Shannon TaylorSenior Vice President & Senior Counsel, Government Affairs, ITI.

Topics will include:

  • What types of information could be subject to federal legislation?
  • What obligations are best placed on covered entities that collect and use data?
  • What choices should consumers have regarding the collection and use of their personal information?
  • How is a US federal privacy law likely to compare to GDPR and other laws, both domestic and international?
  • What would be the optimal enforcement regime of any federal privacy law?
  • What role should states play?
