Mintz and ML Strategies Represent GE in Acquisition and Permitting of GE Innovation Point

Attorneys from Mintz, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C.  represented GE in the acquisition and permitting of GE Innovation Point, GE’s new corporate headquarters.

The acquisition of the project site marks a major milestone for GE, which in January 2016 announced its decision to move to Boston.  Attorneys from the firm’s Environmental, Real Estate and Construction Law practices and their colleagues at ML Strategies worked seamlessly with GE and its consultants in designing and implementing a plan to expedite both the acquisition of the GE Innovation Point site and the many approvals necessary to begin construction.

“Mintz and ML Strategies were the perfect partners for this complex project, bringing together a broad range of legal expertise, strategic government relations thinking, and a deep understanding of all things Boston,” said Ann R. Klee, GE Vice President, Boston Development and Operations. “We could not have done what we did – moving from the initial decision to relocate to Boston to site selection to the start of construction in just over a year without the great partnership with Mintz and ML Strategies. They were with us at every step of the process.”

“It’s extraordinary how quickly this large and complex project on the Boston waterfront has moved forward and into construction. It is a testament to the collaboration we’ve enjoyed with GE, and the skills of Mintz, ML Strategies and the other members of the GE Innovation Point team,” said Jeffrey R. Porter, Chair of the firm’s Environmental Law Section. “We are honored to help make GE Innovation Point a reality for our long-time client and look forward to continued collaboration with our new neighbors.”

ML Strategies, the firm’s consulting affiliate, provided strategic advice to the company when it was considering relocating its headquarters to Boston, particularly in GE’s consideration of economic incentives put forth by the city and the Commonwealth. “We are pleased to have played a role in assisting GE with this momentous milestone,” said Senator William “Mo” Cowan, President and CEO of ML Strategies. “We are delighted to welcome the company to Boston and we wish them continued success in their new headquarters.”

The project will include the rehabilitation of two historic buildings and construction of a new, 12-story structure. GE will begin work on the historic buildings immediately and plans to break ground on the new building this spring.

In addition to Mr. Porter, GE was represented by Daniel O. Gaquin, Co-Chair of the Real Estate Section, Rebecca A. Lee, Member of the Real Estate Practice, and William M. Hill, Co-chair of the Construction Law Practice. In addition to Senator Cowan, Julie Cox, Senior Vice President of Government Relations & Manager of Operations, and Robert J. Ryan, Vice President of Project Development for ML Strategies, continue to assist GE with the project.
