Mintz Closes Chapter on Challenges to Patents Owned by Straight Path IP Group

Latest Victory is Last of 17 Challenges before the PTAB, this time on Remand from the Federal Circuit

Attorneys from the Intellectual Property Section of Mintz, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. successfully defeated the last of 17 challenges to several patents owned by its client, Straight Path IP Group Inc. that had been pending before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (Board) as a result of suits brought by companies including Samsung, Cisco and LG, among others.

The final challenge, Sipnet EU S.R.O v. Straight Path IP Group, Inc. (Case IPR2013-00246), had been before the Board on remand from the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit after the appellate court reversed the Board’s construction of a critical claim of the patent at issue. Applying the correct construction, the Board rejected the challenges, marking the latest in a string of decisions validating Straight Path’s patents.

Several district court cases were stayed pending the outcome of the IPRs. Straight Path is moving swiftly to have the stays lifted and is looking forward to having its day in court.

James Wodarski, Michael T. Renaud, William A. Meunier and Michael C. Newman, all Members in Mintz IP Section, led the Federal Circuit appeal and the remand to the Board. They were assisted by associates Sandra J. Badin and Nicholas W. Armington.
