Mintz Strengthens Life Sciences Buildout with Patent Litigator in New York

NEW YORK — Mintz welcomes Melinda Roberts as a Member in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice in New York, continuing the firm’s strategic growth in life sciences and patent litigation. Melinda represents leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and patent owners in high-stakes patent disputes, with deep experience in Hatch-Waxman litigation and post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

“We have had great success in building a life sciences patent litigation team with the depth and range to handle our clients’ most consequential disputes,” said Managing Partner Bob Bodian. “Melinda’s extensive experience in Hatch-Waxman and other complex pharmaceutical patent disputes adds further depth to an already formidable team, positioning us to continue growing alongside our clients.”

Melinda has handled complex patent disputes involving biologics, small molecules, and other life sciences technologies from early case development through trial. Her experience spans composition-of-matter, formulation, and dosing regimen patents and includes litigating matters in federal court and before the PTAB. With a background in chemistry, she brings a strong technical foundation to matters involving sophisticated scientific and legal issues.

“Our life sciences clients are facing increasingly complex patent challenges as they work to protect the innovations at the core of their businesses and as they enter new markets,” said Sige Gutman, Chair of Mintz’s Life Sciences Litigation Practice. “With a strong scientific foundation and deep experience litigating biologics and small molecule disputes in federal court and before the PTAB, Melinda is a terrific addition to our team as we continue delivering for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients at every stage of their growth.”

“The strength of Mintz’s Life Sciences practice was a major factor in my decision to join, along with the entrepreneurial spirit and energy I saw across the team,” said Melinda. “I’m excited to continue serving major pharmaceutical companies and patent owners, while building on Mintz’s platform to expand my work in areas like biosimilars, beauty, and women’s health, as well as with emerging life sciences companies.”

Melinda joins Mintz from Venable, where she was a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation group. Before beginning her legal career, she conducted neuroscience research at Yale University School of Medicine. She earned her JD from the University of Wisconsin Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Yale University.
