Furthering Commitment to San Diego Entrepreneurial Community, Mintz Participates in USD Fowler Business Concept Challenge

Mintz Member Sebastian Lucier to Serve on Event’s Prestigious Panel of Judges and Award Scholarship Prize

Continuing its commitment to supporting the San Diego start-up and entrepreneurial community, Mintz will participate in the University of San Diego (USD) Fowler Business Concept Challenge, which is an early stage, entry-level seed competition for both undergraduate and graduate students to explore and develop their entrepreneurship potential. This year’s event will be held virtually on October 30, and Mintz Member Sebastian Lucier will serve on the panel of judges and award a scholarship prize to the “Most Engaging” presenter.

Mr. Lucier is a highly technical attorney and seasoned practitioner at Mintz focused on advising start-ups, venture capital-backed companies, and middle-market businesses. He has significant experience relating to financing, corporate formation and governance, and mergers and acquisitions. He is a key contributor to MintzEdge, an online resource for entrepreneurs that includes useful tools and information for starting and growing a company. In addition, Mr. Lucier serves as an Adjunct Law Professor at the University of San Diego School of Law (his alma mater), and is a supervising attorney for USD’s Entrepreneurship Clinic, advising high technology business start-ups and other emerging growth companies, as well as mentoring and training students in the key legal services needed by entrepreneurs.

“The Fowler Business Concept Challenge is an energizing event that embodies the University’s entrepreneurial spirit,” said Mr. Lucier. “As a proud member of the USD community, as well as the broader San Diego business community, I am looking forward to hearing about each of the proposed businesses and solutions the students have aptly developed.”

Through thought leadership published by MintzEdge and elsewhere, and the expertise of West Coast practitioners in the firm’s Venture Capital & Emerging Companies Practice, Mintz maintains strong ties with the San Diego start-up and entrepreneurial community, and is helping foster the next generation of start-ups and emerging growth entrepreneurs.

Recently, a number of the firm’s San Diego-based attorneys were appointed to boards and other advisory roles at the region’s top universities and research institutions. For example, Member and Co-chair of the firm’s Venture Capital & Emerging Companies Practice Jeremy Glaser was appointed as a board member of the University of California San Diego’s The Basement, a campus-wide innovation and entrepreneurial hub dedicated to supporting all students regardless of department affiliation. Additionally, Member Kenneth Jenkins, PhD, was appointed to the Dean’s Leadership Council of the University of California San Diego’s globally top ranked Division of Biological Sciences. Finally, Member Andrew Skale serves on the Advisory Board of San Diego State University (SDSU)’s Zahn Innovation Platform (ZIP) Launchpad, an on-campus incubator that supports SDSU students, staff, and faculty from all majors and departments in launching start-up companies.

The Fowler Business Concept Challenge is organized by the USD School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Catalyzer, which focuses on building entrepreneurs as they build their innovations. Its vision is to empower entrepreneurs with the values, knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that enable them to create world-changing innovations that address humanity’s most urgent challenges and opportunities.
