Mintz Earns Top Ranking in Inaugural Massachusetts Construction Law Category by Chambers USA 2020

Members and Co-Chairs of Mintz’s highly regarded Construction Law Practice also garner Band One recognition

Mintz is pleased to announce that the firm has been ranked in Band One for Construction in Massachusetts by Chambers USA 2020. In addition, Members and Co-chairs of the firm’s Construction Law Practice William M. Hill and Samuel M. Tony Starr have been ranked in Band One. Notably, this is the first year that the guide has included law firm and individual rankings for construction law in the Commonwealth.

In connection with this inaugural ranking, Chambers’ research concluded that Mintz is known for its “highly regarded team which is frequently called upon to advise owners, construction managers and general contractors on substantial construction projects.”

Significant representations that contributed to this recognition include:

  • Mintz represented General Electric (GE) in one of the largest private environmental remediation projects in United States. GE was tasked under state and federal consent orders with the environmental clean-up of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) related to past use of GE manufacturing facilities in Upstate New York, adjacent to the Hudson River. Significantly, in addition to GE manufacturing sites, the clean-up encompassed environmental dredging in more than 40 miles of the Hudson River. Mintz lawyers assisted in the negotiation of construction contracts and dispute avoidance for this complex project valued at more than $1.5 billion.
  • Mintz served as construction litigation counsel for Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), a UK-based international theatre owner and operator of over 50 venues. The firm has represented ATG in Massachusetts state court litigation involving construction defects in newly renovated historic Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston. After a multi-party phased mediation, the action was successfully settled.

The ongoing success of Mintz’s Construction Law Practice is driven in part by its strong leadership. Mr. Hill is a preeminent construction lawyer whose practice encompasses construction and real estate disputes and transactions, as well as commercial and corporate litigation. He counsels owners, lenders, general contractors, joint ventures, and subcontractors in transactions and disputes across a variety of private and public sector projects. He has focused on both delivering a variety of projects and resolving disputes for clients in an efficient and timely manner. For more than two decades, Mr. Hill has been a leader in various construction bar organizations, including the American Bar Association’s Forum on Construction Law. He served as Chair of the Forum and developed the concept of Building for Good, Inc. (B4G), a national, web-based platform linking nonprofits and charities with skilled, pro bono construction lawyers.

Mr. Starr is a litigator and leading construction lawyer who works with contractors, owners, developers, and public authorities. He represents clients in significant construction litigation, arbitrations, and mediations. He is a sought-after speaker on construction law developments and alternative dispute resolution. Chambers noted that Mr. Starr “wins praise from across the market for his deep knowledge of construction contracts and litigation.”

Mintz’s Construction Law Practice Group is adept in both the public and private sectors and has a track record of navigating projects to completion cost-effectively and smoothly. The team has experience representing owners, contractors, design professionals, universities, and global public companies across various sectors. Litigation, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution form a significant part of this practice.
