Lance is regarded as an authority in licensing and technology transactions. As head of the firm’s West Coast technology transactions practice, he represents companies of all sizes and across most industries. Recognized for his thoughtful, efficient, and strategic approach, he structures, crafts, and negotiates contracts to achieve the objectives of his clients.
Lance heads the firm’s West Coast Technology Transactions Practice. The Technology Transactions Practice specializes in strategic collaborations, technology licensing, and other business transactions directed to the use, transfer, and development of technology and intellectual property assets.
He advises both growth and mature companies in the life sciences and information technology industries. Lance provides strategic and creative advice for the commercialization and exploitation of technology assets and has successfully structured and negotiated numerous high-profile technology-based transactions with and for global industry leaders.
His practice includes development and commercialization collaborations; intellectual property licensing; strategic intellectual property asset purchases and sales; technology spin-offs; commercial agreements (such as manufacturing and distribution arrangements); outsourcing; and intellectual property litigation settlement agreements. Lance also advises on general corporate matters and provides general outside counseling for a number of his clients.
His public company clients include Biogen Inc., CareFusion, Hitachi, Fair Isaac Corporation, and ViaSat, Inc.
During law school, he was an editor of Stanford Law Review.
