Skilled Health Care Regulatory Attorney to Establish Mintz West Coast Health Law Presence

Mintz is pleased to announce that prominent health care attorney Lara Compton has joined the firm’s Los Angeles office as a Member in its highly regarded Health Law Practice. She maintains a versatile legal practice focused on health care regulatory compliance, privacy and security, and physician relationships.

Ms. Compton joins Mintz from a health care specialty law firm based in Los Angeles, where she served as Co-chair of the Regulatory / Transactional Practice. She advises clients on business planning and structuring, contract negotiations, risk avoidance, the development of new health technology and digital health-related products and services, and a broad range of reimbursement and regulatory compliance and strategy.

Ms. Compton has led multiple HIPAA breach investigations and has counseled clients on applicable reporting requirements. She also advises on compliance with federal and state anti-kickback and self-referral laws (e.g. Stark), and related fraud and abuse issues. She has a particular expertise in health care regulatory compliance requirements triggered by the purchase and sale of entities, ownership units, and assets.

Ms. Compton’s clients have included traditional health care service providers, health plans, life sciences companies, and health information technology and telehealth companies. She was previously an attorney at two global law firms and served as in-house counsel to Sutter Health and Community Medical Center.

Ms. Compton has served the Los Angeles County Bar Association for many years and was recently appointed to Vice Chair of the LACBA-LACMA Committee on Biomedical Ethics, which studies issues of biomedical ethics involved in the treatment of patients and recommends guidelines.

"Lara is a skilled health care regulatory attorney whose focus is on many of the most dynamic and evolving areas of the industry. Our national clients will benefit from her depth of expertise, particularly in telehealth, which has seen significant advancement throughout the COVID-19 public health crisis,” said Karen Lovitch, Member and Chair of Mintz’s Health Law Practice. “Furthermore, Lara’s experience serving as in-house counsel for two nonprofit health systems will inform her practical approach to solving Mintz clients’ complex regulatory challenges.”

Lara will be a tremendous resource to our clients in California and beyond, especially amid the digital transformation in the health care industry.”

In 2020, Mintz Los Angeles gained Erin Natter, Daniel Guggenheim, and Michael Soejoto as Members in the firm’s national Real Estate Practice, and also James A. Rapore as a Member in the firm’s national Litigation Practice.
