As previously reported by the team from ML Strategies, one of the many telehealth developments to watch this year has been the Federation of State Medical Board’s (FSMB) Interstate Licensure Compact. 

Last week, the American Medical Association (AMA) released new guiding principles on the provision of telemedicine services. The AMA’s guiding principles come on the heels of the Federation of State Medical Board’s (FSMB) adoption of its new model telemedicine guidelines and largely echoes the state boards’ views with a few notable exceptions.

On April 26, 2014, the Federation of State Medical Boards (“FSMB”) adopted a Model Policy for the Appropriate Use of Telemedicine Technologies in the Practice of Medicine (the “Model Policy”). 

In a recent advisory opinion, the OIG allowed a hospital to share telemedicine resources with another hospital, in the interest of promoting new models of consultation and improving patient care by reducing unnecessary patient transfers.
